Abstract

The environmental crisis is both undeniable and caused by human activity. Therefore, the issue is not only the crisis itself but, foremost, human responsibility in it. The Anthropocene is not an inevitable destiny; rather, it is an unprecedented event that must be understood as part of humankind’s responsibility toward nature. This article addresses the problem of human responsibility, particularly in relation to the mediation of technology. After defining the meaning of the Anthropocene, it examines the role of technological power in transforming nature. Within this framework, theological perspectives on humankind’s role are critically analyzed. A key limitation of contemporary theological reflections is their inability to fully account for the transformation of nature as mediated by technology. This article seeks to overcome that limitation by offering essential insights for a theological understanding of technological power in shaping the natural world. Specifically, it highlights two key considerations: first, the need to carefully distinguish between God’s creative action and human technological production; second, the importance of integrating technological power in a way that respects the integrity of Creation.
