The ecological crisis is no longer a distant or theoretical concern but an urgent global reality. This paper explores the crisis from an interdisciplinary perspective, emphasizing the necessity of philosophical inquiry alongside scientific analysis. While climate change and environmental degradation are widely recognized through empirical data, the concept of “crisis” itself belongs to the realm of philosophy and the social sciences, requiring ethical, existential, and theological reflection. Environmental issues are not merely technical problems but fundamentally ethical challenges, as humanity’s unprecedented power over nature carries both the potential for progress and destruction. This Special Issue (SI) situates the ecological crisis within the broader context of environmental philosophy, tracing its evolution from early environmental ethics to contemporary debates, including longtermism and planetary sustainability. It highlights the ambivalence of technological advancement, which not only provides solutions but also exacerbates environmental threats. The SI also engages with key philosophical figures and movements, such as Hans Jonas, deep ecology, and biocultural ethics, to illustrate how philosophy can offer critical tools for understanding and responding to environmental challenges.
