Abstract

This paper aims to show the importance of Scheler’s theory of affectivity for the sociology of values. The first part of the paper is devoted to his theory of feelings and emotions and especially focuses on the idea that there is an intentional feeling which is responsible for the apprehension of values. This theory can be seen as a forefather of theory of “affective intentionality” which has become popular in the current debate on the emotions. The second part of the paper analyses possible collective forms of affective intentionality and elaborates some consequences of these theses for the sociology of values.
